Louisville was established by coal miners when the Welch Mine became the first of many to open in the area. Local landowner and coal mine engineer Louis Nawatny named the region after himself, and the town was incorporated in 1882. Today, the City of Louisville is home to 21,226 residents who enjoy the small-town feel and tight-knit community.
