Eldora Opens With Its Sale Unsettled. Your Ski Day Still Runs on Older Rules.

October 22, 2026

"The revenues from the resort are the primary source of repayment," Nederland Mayor Nichole Sterling wrote in a Sept. 30 open letter. The Colorado Sun quoted the line in its Oct. 8 report on the town's effort to buy Eldora Mountain Resort. Read from Boulder, the sentence means the town's plan depends on lift tickets, passes and parking lots producing enough money to pay off the bonds.

Eldora's FAQ lists Friday, Nov. 13 as its target opening day, about three weeks from now. The mountain will open while its ownership is still undecided. For anyone driving or riding up Boulder Canyon, though, a parking condition Boulder County set in 2020 and an RTD timetable that starts at 14th Street will matter more than the outcome of the sale.

Where the purchase actually stands

The deal has been underway since 2024, and the past few weeks brought most of the news. Powdr put Eldora up for sale in mid-2024. Nederland announced a letter of intent in July 2025, and the town's board of trustees approved a $120 million purchase on Jan. 6, 2026. The sale was supposed to close by the end of April and did not. The Denver Post, reporting with BusinessDen on Oct. 2, said the purchase agreement has expired, the two sides are still talking, and any deal is now expected to be a sale-leaseback. The Mountain-Ear also reported on Sept. 30 that the agreement had expired and that Powdr is not contractually bound to sell.

Figure Amount Reported by
Purchase price approved Jan. 6, 2026 $120 million Denver Post
Bond authorization cap Up to $225 million Denver Post, Colorado Sun
Interest rate the town is now modeling About 8.5%, up from about 7.5% Denver Post
Donations the town says it needs $20 million Denver Post, Colorado Sun
Nederland's annual town budget About $3 million Colorado Sun
Nederland's population About 1,500 Colorado Sun

According to the Sun, the bonds would be issued without a credit rating, and the town says it could not get an investment-grade rating without an operating history. The town has asked Gov. Jared Polis's office for help. The $20 million in donations would pay for capital projects, which keeps them out of the order of payments the bonds dictate. The two outlets give different figures for what the town has already spent. The Post reports $2.5 million paid to various firms. The Sun reports that the town's recent updates show $1.15 million in acquisition costs and that the town is on the hook for $2.5 million if the deal does not close.

Why last winter keeps coming up

Sterling's letter says bond buyers asked the town "to more aggressively model poor snow years" and to include the actual results from the most recent season. The Sun called the 2025-26 winter the weakest snowfall in half a century, and it brought Colorado's steepest annual drop in skier visits in more than 40 years.

That is why the improvements Boulder skiers have heard about are on hold. The town's list includes an upgrade to the Corona lift, which serves expert terrain, and the 62-acre Jolly Jug expansion, which would add a new chairlift for beginner and intermediate terrain. Both are proposals tied to the purchase. None of them has been announced for the 2026-27 season.

Whichever way the deal goes, the operator this season is the same. If the sale closes, the Sun reports, Powdr would manage Eldora for two years before the town takes over. If it does not close, Powdr still owns the mountain. Powdr's Ikon arrangement with Alterra would have to be renegotiated under town ownership, and the town's Oct. 5 update said it was "excited to continue that partnership." Eldora's 26/27 pass page lists an unlimited adult pass at $789 and a four-day pass at $359, and it says unlimited Full and Base Ikon passes have no blackout dates at Eldora.

The parking rule that came before any sale

The policy that shapes a Boulder ski day the most dates to 2020. The Daily Camera reported in February 2020 that Boulder County's approval of Eldora's parking expansion required a $10 fee for solo drivers on weekends, holidays and days with at least 10 inches of snow in the previous 24 hours. Boulder Reporting Lab's 2022 coverage of canyon congestion described the same county-required surcharge.

Eldora's getting-here page sets out the current rules:

  • Solo drivers pay on Saturdays, Sundays, certain holiday periods and weekdays with 10 or more inches of new snow. The resort may also charge on other days without advance notice.
  • On fee days, any car with two or more people parks free.
  • Elk Lot, the westernmost section of the lot, is reserved seven days a week for cars carrying three or more people, first come, first served. When it fills, those cars park elsewhere in the lots.
  • There are no parking reservations and no paid reserved spots.

Eldora still lists the 26/27 fee days as "TBA," and the page gives no fee amount for this season. The $10 figure comes from the county approval. Check the resort's page before you assume it still applies.

Under these rules, one passenger is worth more than any parking strategy. A second person in the car removes the fee, and a third gets you into Elk Lot near the Alpenglow chairlift and the lodges.

The bus clock from Downtown Boulder Station

If you don't want to drive the canyon, take the bus. Eldora says the RTD NB bus leaves from Downtown Boulder Station at 1800 14th St. and drops riders "just yards from" the Alpenglow chairlift, 21 miles west of downtown. The current NB/NB1 timetable covers Sept. 27, 2026 through Jan. 2, 2027, and its footnote says service to the resort runs from mid-November to mid-April.

Weekdays Saturdays Sundays and holidays
First bus from Downtown Boulder Station 5:35 a.m., arrives 6:22 a.m. 6:10 a.m., arrives 7:02 a.m. 7:10 a.m., about 48 minutes
Westbound pattern Irregular gaps Hourly through 5:11 p.m. Hourly through 5:10 p.m.
Last bus back from Eldora 5:11 p.m. 5:12 p.m. 6:12 p.m.

Weekday morning departures leave Downtown Boulder Station at 5:35, 6:24, 7:40, 8:40 and 10:10 a.m. If you plan to ski after work on a powder day, check the timetable first. The gap between the 8:40 and the 10:10 is the one that catches people out.

Equipment loading also follows the timetable. RTD lists specific westbound stops where skis and bikes can be loaded from the baggage bays: Downtown Boulder Station, Canyon at 14th, 9th, 6th, 5th and 4th, Canyon and Pearl, CO 119 at Fourmile Canyon, Magnolia, Boulder Falls and Hurricane Hill, plus the Nederland Park-n-Ride and Nederland High School. Bikes can go on the front rack at any stop.

RTD's fares page lists $2.75 for a three-hour pass and $5.50 for a day pass, and riders 19 and under ride free. Since the trip runs close to an hour each way and most ski days run longer than three hours, the day pass is the one that covers the round trip.

Where a Boulder carpool can meet

Eldora suggests that skiers coming from Boulder or the Denver area use its Facebook carpool forum to meet at one of Boulder's free weekend parking spots. The City of Boulder's parking guide shows which ones are free. City-owned downtown garages cost nothing on weekends and city holidays, except the Depot Square garage at 3183 Pearl St. in Boulder Junction, which charges every day. On-street parking is free on Sundays. On Saturdays, meters run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. On a Saturday, a downtown garage is the better place to leave a car than a metered curb.

What's on the road up

The current road work sits at the edges of the route. Boulder County lists resurfacing on Ridge Road and Hurricane Hill outside Nederland, with weekday work, delays of up to 15 minutes and completion expected in November. CDOT's CO 119 Safety, Mobility and Bikeway project is on the Diagonal Highway between Boulder and Longmont, not in Boulder Canyon, and is scheduled to finish in spring 2027. That project matters more for anyone driving to Eldora from the northeast side of town than for anyone leaving from downtown.

Last winter's weak snow is why lenders are asking hard questions about Eldora, and this winter's snow will decide how often the 10-inch fee day applies. Through the opening weeks, Powdr runs the lifts and county rules govern the parking lot.

When Eldora's 26/27 fee calendar comes out, we'll be checking it the same way you will. Boulder Residential follows mountain-access changes like this because they shape everyday life on this side of the Front Range. If you'd like to talk about how canyon access figures into where you live or plan to live in Boulder, we're glad to have that conversation.
